Goodwins Analysis - 30 Seconds to Mars
Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics:
Shots of the band playing:
Something that is very typical is a rock music video is to show the band playing. This is because there is a need for close ups of the band due to the fact there are more bands in the genre than individual artists, meaning the promotion of the band as a package is needed more than the promotion of the lead singer. In this video the band are usually seen playing their musical instruments during the chorus of the song. This is the point when the tempo of the song increases which highlights the bands musical talent.
Makeup and Outfit:
In the rock genre the conventions of makeup and outfit have changed slightly. During 2010 when this video was release the conventions were to wear makeup and dark clothing and also having dark hair. As you can see in the video, the band meets all of the criteria. All of the band members are wearing dark clothing which gives a visual like to being a goth. This is something that still is associated to rock music. Each band member is also wearing some form of makeup, such as black eye liner and nail polish, and each band member has black hair. Creating a wholly dark and almost soulless element within the Mise-en-scene.
Lyrics relate to visuals:
Something that is very typical for a lot of music videos is for the lyrics to link to the visuals of the video. In this song for example, when the lyric 'This is who I really am' is sung by the lead singer it is a two shot of lead singer Jared Leto staring directly at an alternate version of himself. This visually connotes that he has found himself. There is also another example when the lyric 'break me down' is sung. The video shows the band members seeing impossible things such as other versions of themselves, people who are not there, and flashes to dead people, connoting a 'mental breakdown' creating direct links to the visuals. Another example would be 'look in my eyes', there is a close up of Jared Leto's face, and his eyes looking directly at the camera as a focal point. The last example of lyrics relating to visuals would be 'finally found myself' as Jared Leto holds himself up against a wall, suggesting that he has finally been able to pin point exactly who he is.
Music relates to visuals:
When talking about the music relating to the visuals, the most common thing to happen is that the video cuts in time to the beat of the song. One example of this in the 30 Seconds to Mars video would be at the start of the video, every time the sound of a bell plays the shot cuts. Another one would be before the chorus there is a long held note before the lyrics start, so the shot stays in the same position until the drums start at which point it cuts to the singer. Usually in a music video, the cuts of the video will match the tempo and the beat of the song. This is something that occurs very often in this music video. All through the video the tempo and beat changes effect the visuals, and there are very often cuts on drum beats. At the start of the chorus there is a fast drum section to indicate that the chorus is starting, which allows for faster cuts, leading into the chorus which has a faster tempo.
Needs of the record label require lots of close ups of band members:
This is something that is very common in music videos. Due to the band being signed to a record label, they will want the band to be seen as often as possible. This is because they will want to audience to become familiar to the band members so they know exactly who they are. The best way for this to be done is for all of the band members to be shown by a close up as often as possible. This is something they have to be careful with because if there are too many close ups of the band it can make the music video look bad. This video works well because all of the band members are acting throughout the whole video. This means that they are the main people seen. This will help the audience to become familiar to them.
Frequent reference to the notion of looking:
Throughout the music video there are lots of moments when someone is either looking into the camera or focused into the distance. When it comes to looking into the camera it is usually the bands lead singer. This is cause he is the band member who is in shot most of the time. Reference to the notion of looking is also seen when the band members all look into room 6277. This is something they are not allowed to do but due to the notion of looking in the video they are intrigued to know.
Intertextual References:
During this music video there are no references to any other music videos. Even though this is the case there are a lot of intertextual references to the film The Shining. One of these references is that they are not allowed in a certain room, this is something that happens in The Shining. The band member skateboarding through the halls also references The Shining because the young boy rides his tricycle through the halls in the film. The other intertextual references are when the twins are shown and when the band member is throwing a bouncy ball at a wall.
